The gender question-type should be removed. It's not needed. You can create it in 2 minutes from a single choice question or a multiple-choice (I'm sure someone will propose a feature request for selecting more than one item too).

I think it would be better to keep the question by adding "Not specified or other".

For me it does'nt matter, but we already have some remarks about that...

If we remove the question, maybe it will have somme references problems in our database when we already use it ... I use it in every Survey ...

Cuurently QuestionTheme didn't allow update whole question data.

It's only a visual update of public question during survey.

Here : you need to add different choice for statistics and export, and surely some other place.

I'm really happy to have it in QuestionTheme, but need update on QuestionTheme system (else is like create single choice manualy).

Uh, that depends on how many conflicting opinions we have. Right now we only know your opinion.

Once you add the third option, you will get feedback to remove it or add more options.
When importing an old survey, you would need to stick to the old female/male till you get the confirmation by the survey designer.
To handle non-binary gender identities there is no longer one question type to fit all. You need to adapt to the audience. You don't know today, what will happen in the next years in each country. So save yourself a lot of work in the future ;-)

Only because this question type is still there this question was raised.

Because, what do you ask?
Do you ask for the gender according to the civil register.
In this case there may be different options in different countries.
Eg. in Germany it was allowed since 2013 to leave blank this entry and since end of 2019 there was a new option "diverse".
So in Germany I only need these four options "male - female - empty - diverse"

Or do you ask something like "How do you feel today?" or more politically correct.
Then you need a lot of different options.
And - as @jelo - you will get one request after the other to add a new option.

So remove it and the survey developer can use his own classification according to his target group, according to the aim of the survey.

In my opinion the question type "list(radio)" is sufficient.
As "bootstrap button" where you add some Fontawesome gender icons it is a good looking solution.

I second the suggestion to remove the predefined question theme (and also 5pt single choice, 5pt/10pt array, increase/same/decrease, ...) at the next core version. Only the Yes/No predefined one makes sense to keep.
Everything else can be turned into a single choice/array question on import.

What about renaming it to Biological Gender ?

@gabrieljenik Relabeling the question type will not help getting this ticket here solved. And "biological gender" was never binary. Humans are sometimes born with sexual organs of of male and female. LimeSurvey is not limited to certain countries or cultural regions. So there is no common ground. Remove it along with other redundant question types, E.g. place a info inside LimeSurvey that these questiontypes are EOL and will be removed in later versions. No longer motivate people to use these questiontypes now and remove later. You cannot change the answeritems, cause that would change exisiting surveys and will cause a lot more trouble than removing the questiontype.

You see so many different ways of asking for gender, that I don't see a common ground soon.

@gabrieljenik: Renaming the question type to MF Gender will not change much. People will raise support tickets, bug reports and forum posts about that MF gender question type. Where is the new Gender question? Why is the MF Gender there?
The Array 5 point and 10 point questions still raises questions about where to find the 7 point question-type. If there only where the array question type, no one would ask that question. The single choice 5 point is another redundant question-type.

Technically you will need to come up with a basic concept to remove/disable/sunset question types.
The first move is to mark them as obsolete in the GUI and give a hint what question type to use instead.
Next move would be to hide these questions-types, when a new survey is created. Importing and editing old surveys still will show these question-types.
This should give enough time to find a converting solution or announce a EOL date for these questions-types in LS6 or LS7.

Start to sunset all the redundant question-types now via GUI.
